5.3 Fact vs. Opinion
The newspaper includes facts and opinions. Learning how to tell the difference between the two is an important critical thinking skill.
  1. Find the editorial page or pages using the E-edition search tool.
  2. Choose one editorial column.
  3. Facts are statements that can be checked or proven. Opinions are statements that cannot be checked or verified.
  4. Read the editorial. Stop after each sentence or group of sentences and decide whether they are facts or opinions.
  5. Identify the words or phrases that denote fact and opinion.
  6. Using the E-edition PRINT tool, print out the editorial so that you can underline the facts and circle the opinions.
