5.2 Laws and Consequences
The newspaper often includes stories about our laws and how they impact our lives. By reading about our laws, students learn to better understand actions and consequences.
  1. Ask students to find a story in the news that is about a law being broken. You can do this lesson with the whole class or assign students to work independently. You might start by asking students to brainstorm a list of search terms they might use with the e-edition search tool in order to find a story about involving the law.
  1. Students should identify the law and describe how it was broken.
  1. Students should write a paragraph telling what the consequence is for breaking this law. Do they think it's a fair consequence?
  1. Students should choose a school rule and analyze it the same way. They should describe the rule and the consequences for breaking it and then tell if they think that is fair.
