The Sports section and the weather page provide a great volume of data that students can use to practice computation. Here are some activities your students can do to sharpen their math skills.
The weather information in the newspaper provides a significant amount of authentic data for use in math activities.
You can have students list temperatures in the weather information from lowest to highest.
They can figure medians or averages of a given geographical area or they can find the difference between lows and highs of selected cities.
They can convert Fahrenheit to Celsius using this formula. Tc = (5/9)x(Tf-32); Tc = temperature in degrees Celsius, Tf = temperature in degrees Fahrenheit
Students can use the statistics in the Sports section to write word problems for a partner to solve.
