4.2 Money
The newspaper is an exceptional resource for teaching about money - earning, spending, saving and more. Begin with a discussion to assess what your students already know about money.
  1. Ask students to talk about how they get spending money and what they do with it when they have it. They can skim the newspaper to find expensive items, inexpensive items, etc.
  1. Have the students create a list of products that are advertised in the newspaper and record the current prices. Then they can take their lists home and have an adult approximate the prices of those items ten years ago. Or they can go online to do the research and find out the prices from a decade ago.
  1. Students should select three apartments for rent listed in the classified ads and do the following:
Compute the total annual rent for each of the three. Determine the average monthly rent based on the three apartments they have chosen. Determine which of the apartments appears to be the better choice and explain why.
