2.4 Moving Through the News
One of the advantages to using an E-edition is that it's easy to move around the newspaper. There are several ways to teach students to do that quickly.
  1. Explain to students that a pull-down or drop down menu is a list of commands or options that appears when you select an item with a mouse. Usually, when they click on the menu title, that causes the options to appear to “drop down” and be displayed. They can then choose options by clicking the menu item or by continuing to hold the mouse button down, scrolling (rolling their cursor down the list with the mouse) down the list and letting go when they're on the item they want to choose.
  2. Direct students to find the pull-down menu to take them from page to page. They can also use the arrow icons. There may be just one to the left and one to the right or there may be four arrows. They may be labeled “First,” “Prev,” “Next,” and “Last.” “First” takes them to the first page of the newspaper, “Last” takes them to the last page, “Prev” or the left arrow takes them to the page just before the one they're on and “Next” or the right arrow goes to the next page.
  3. As students move through the E-edition, they can choose the icon on the toolbar that says “Single” to see just one page at a time or “Double” to see a two-page spread, or they may be able to choose “Thumb” or “Thumbnail” to see tiny images of many pages.
  4. The various sections of the newspaper are displayed on an index sidebar and also on an index pull-down menu. There may be an index of every story in the newspaper, listed by headline.
Tip TipTIP: Students will understand the parameters of the lesson once you clearly establish them so begin each newspaper lesson by telling them what your goal is. For example, "In today's lesson you will learn how to navigate through a newspaper to find what you want."
