What Does the President Do?
Explain to students that being President of the United States is actually five jobs.
The president is Chief Executive and chooses government officials with approval by the Senate.
He or she is Chief Legislator and can veto bills in Congress or use influence to get them passed.
She or he is Chief Diplomat and determines foreign policy.
The president is Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.
Finally, the president is Chief of State, representing our country to other world leaders.
Have students skim the newspaper to find out which job the president seems to be doing today.
Students can survey the Help Wanted ads to find jobs that are most like president. They can then write a Help Wanted ad seeking someone who would be a good president.
