Your students will divide into parties. Each party will choose a candidate. They will run campaigns and hold an election. The lessons are suggested in order but the timetable is fluid and up to teacher discretion. It may be best to plan to assign one step per class period, allowing several weeks, concurrent with your other election lessons, for the entire class election process to take place.</b></i></font> </DIV></DIV> <DIV class="txtblk"> <OL CLASS="bullet1"><LI><SPAN CLASS="bulletimg1"><img src="../images/bullet.gif" alt=""></SPAN><SPAN CLASS="bullet1"><font color="#ff0000">Divide your class into the two major parties-Democrats and Republicans. Allow time for students to meet in their groups and to choose 5 candidates from each party to run in a primary election.</font> </SPAN><LI><SPAN CLASS="bulletimg1"><img src="../images/bullet.gif" alt=""></SPAN><SPAN CLASS="bullet1"><font color="#ff0000">Allow each primary candidate to make a two-minute speech trying to convince people to vote for him or her.</font> </SPAN><LI><SPAN CLASS="bulletimg1"><img src="../images/bullet.gif" alt=""></SPAN><SPAN CLASS="bullet1"><font color="#ff0000">Hold your primary election within each party resulting in the choice of the top 3 final candidates for each party.</font> </SPAN><LI><SPAN CLASS="bulletimg1"><img src="../images/bullet.gif" alt=""></SPAN><SPAN CLASS="bullet1"><font color="#ff0000">Next comes the political conventions, with each party holding its own meeting. The spokesperson for each party should call the roll of each member's name. (Explain that in the actual convention the roll is called by state, not by individual person.) Each person will choose from the 3 candidates. The top vote winner will be the final candidate for each party. But, she was given an assignment to prepare a debate as though she was then Democratic presidential nominee, Lyndon Johnson.
